ROTARY CLUB OF LOYOLA HEIGHTS
On 4 January 1989, the Rotary Club of Loyola Heights (RCLH) was chartered as a member of Rotary International. Immediately upon chartering, the RCLH started to intitate major projects many of which have become it’s signature projects and are ongoing and continuing to this day. Some of the more notable projetcs are as follows :
- Support for the Ephpheta Foundation for the Blind either through direct donations or via matching grants :
-Support for the livelihood training for the visually impaired
-Donation of of housing units for the visually impaired
-Support for the Children of the blind through the establishment of a computer training center.
-Donation of transport vehicles (matching grants)
-Donation of Cataract operating machines (matching grants)
- Annual mass weddings for poor couples (The only one in District 3780)
- Marriage / Family Encounter – a relationship enhancing weekend live-in seminar for married couples and separately for families.
- Medical and dental outreach missions
- Fundraising and donations for the victims of muslides, floods, fire and typhoons in various parts of the Philippines (Quezon, Southern Leyte, Bicol, Guimaras) and in 2006 for the flood victims in Southern Malaysia in coordination with District 3310.
- CHEERS – Saturday teach-in for pre-school children from the depressed areas in preparation for their enrollment into the formal school program.
- College Scholarships for Education Majors.
- St. Matthews Feeding Program for the malnourished children in various depressed areas in Quezon City.
- High Speed Tailoring and Dressmaking Livelihood training for the unemployed in the community.
- Formation of the Multi-Sectoral Task Force for Peace and Security in the community.
- Formation of 2 Rotaract Clubs, 1 Interact Club and 1 Earlyact Club
- District wide “Adopt-A-Library and Book Donation” project.
- The Brookside Rotary Internatuional Village – A new community for more than 300 families from the highly depressed areas of Payatas, Quezon City and who previously depended garbage scavenging for livelihood. The RCLH was instrumental in terms of provding for the folowing :
-Low Cost Housing units (300 plus) mostly through direct donations from the RCLH, other Rotary Clubs (locally and abroad) and various other service oriented partner organizations;
-Water distribution and purification system (Matching Grants)
-Anti-Tubercolosis treatment program (Matching Grant)
-Children’s Computer Training Center
Others- Health Center, Library, Basketball Cout, Chapel and a 6-Room Elementary School.
For RY 2007-08, through the efforts of DG George Fontaine (District 5000, Maui, Hawaii), The RCLH in partnership with it’s sister club, the Rotary Club of Kihei Wailea and other co-sponsoring clubs in District 5000 has launched the “Orphanact Philippines” in order to identify and provide support to deserving orphanages and special childrens center in the Philippines.
Presently, the RCLH has 77 members, the biggest in Ditrict 3780 and the 6th biggest Rotary Club in the Philippines as of October 31, 2007. It has earned the distinction of being the only club in District 3780 who has won the most outstanding club and most outstanding president awards consecutively for the past 5 years (RY’s 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07) and many of its members having been honored with the highest individual awards not only in the district but also with Rotary International.
The RCLH has consistently been one of the top contributors to the Rotary Foundation in District 3780 with more than 40 members as Paul Harris or mulitple Paul Harris Fellows and the rest are all sustaining. It has been able to establish mutually beneficial sister club relations with about 17 Rotary clubs worldwide and 15 clubs throughout the Philippines. Since it’s inception, the RCLH has sponsored the formation of two other clubs in District 3780 (Rotary Club’s of Eastwood and Pearl of the Orient).
